Given the many complex challenges that disadvantaged people face, the disadvantaged people that we support are disproportionately more likely to face barriers to higher education, employment, and training. Like many others on the edge in our community, disadvantaged people face significant challenges, making the transition from home to public particularly challenging, such as:
These negative factors are often complex and deeply embedded by the time disadvantaged people make the transition to enter public. Given that these disadvantaged people are the furthest from formative opportunities in public, questions remain as to whether our policies will provide disadvantaged people with the necessary support to find and sustain activities in public.
Look around. Some adults in your neighborhood might not be capable of taking care of themselves and their families. This might be due to one or more unfortunate events. This is one of the reasons why their family members may want them in hospitable care. It is the responsibility of adults to take care of their selves, because they are capable of doing so. Sometimes, however, adults may not live up to this expectation. In cases like an incapacitating illness that adult day care is essential.
While illnesses such as the common cold, pneumonia, and diarrhea are easy to treat in the developed world, these conditions often prove fatal in disadvantaged families. Other diseases, such as malaria and parasitic infections, disproportionately affect the global poor. Among victims of these diseases, children under the age of five have the highest mortality rates and the slowest recovery times. Economic inequality is directly tied to childhood mortality rate: the poorer a child is, the more likely he or she is to die from a preventable health condition. At NAMUHOPE, we envision communities where all families will be able to celebrate their little boy’s first birthday, or their daughter’s first day at school. These are milestones that all families should look forward to and cherish. We look for organizations working in these areas providing services to these children.
